Cancer: Thriving and Surviving

The Cancer: Thriving and Surviving workshops take place once a week for six weeks, for 1-15 cancer survivors. Some of the subjects covered include:

  • Techniques to deal with problems such as frustration, fatigue, pain, isolation, depression, poor sleep and living with uncertainty
  • Appropriate exercise for regaining and maintaining flexibility, and endurance
  • Making decisions about treatment and complementary therapies
  • Communicating effectively with family, friends, and health professionals
  • Nutrition and weight management
  • Setting priorities
  • Relationships

Program Details

Settings/Facilities

All orgazations must have a license.  Community-based facilities such as senior centers, community centers, libraries, hospitals, churches, etc.

Six sessions (1/week for 6 weeks)

Outcomes

Twenty-seven workshops were conducted, with 167 participants. Over 6 months, improvement was observed in: provider communication, depression, energy, sleep and stress-related problems. The difference in change over time observed among the intervention vs. 89 controls indicate a net beneficial effect for provider communication; and decreases in depression, pain, problems related to stress and sleep
