Better Choices Better Health: Arthritis

The Better Choices, Better Health®- Arthritis program, formerly named the Healthier Living with Arthritis program, is the online version of the Arthritis Self-Management Program. 

Topics covered include: 1) techniques to deal with problems such as pain, fatigue, frustration and isolation, 2) appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility, and endurance, 3) appropriate use of medications, 4) communicating effectively with family, friends, and health professionals, 5) healthy eating, and, 6) making informed treatment decisions, 7) disease related problem solving, 8) getting a good night's sleep.

Workshop is 6 weeks long with new lessons posted each week. Participants log on at their convenience 2-3 times each week for a total of 1-2 hours.

Outcomes

Compared to control group members, workshop participants at six months demonstrated improvements in pain, disability, health distress, role function, self-reported health, and self-efficacy to deal with the consequences of arthritis. These outcomes remained the same at 12 months. At that time, participants compared to controls also demonstrated a decrease in hospitalizations.
