Better Choices, Better Health

Better Choices, Better Health™, previously named Self-Management @ Stanford Healthier Living with Ongoing Health Problems, is an online workshop for those with chronic conditions. Participants log on at their convenience to complete a series of lessons. Specialized programs are offered for those living with diabetes, arthritis, and cancer. Topics covered include:

1) Techniques to deal with problems such as frustration, fatigue, pain and isolation,
2) Appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility, and endurance,
3) Appropriate use of medications,
4) Communicating effectively with family, friends, and health professionals,
5) Healthy eating,  
6) Making informed treatment decisions,
7) Disease related problem solving,
8) Advanced directives.

Online program, participants log on at their convenience 2-3 times each week for a total of about 2 hours per week.

Each workshop is six weeks with new lessons posted each week. Lessons take about 2 hours per week, participants log on at their convenience.

At one year, the group who took the online workshop had significant improvements in health status compared with the control group. The intervention group had similar results to the small-group CDSMP participants. Change in self-efficacy at 6 months was found to be associated with better health status outcomes at one year.
